KINDNESS RIDES FOREVER FREE
By Peter Vuono
Dedicated to the friends and family of Bill Overton.
Years ago in the early 90's I got involved in doing pro magic and escape artistry. I was always on the lookout for mediums through which I could promote my show. At about the same time, I was put wise by my friend Mike of a very unique motorcycle show in Brockton called,"Big Bill's Motorcycle World". The cable show would be one of only two cable shows in America in the 90's dedicated to motorcycles and it's participants. The producer, director and mastermind was Big Bill Overton. Big bill was an imposing figure at about 6'6" and about 300lbs. What I liked most about him, however, was the authentic air of kindness that emanated from his speech and demeanor. I just knew he was approachable and asked for an audition.
I went to his home on Prospect St. and with the help of my friend Greg, we put on a family friendly and successful escape act right in front of Bill, his family and friends. I felt so welcomed that I felt like I was performing amongst my own family! I got the slot on Bill's show and it went just as well with the great encouragement of Bill's friend, Bill"Just Plain" Hammond and Bill's helpful son Stevie.
I don't really know if the two shows got me any publicity but what I do know is that I came away from Bill and his family with something far more valuable- kindness and a better self worth. Bill was authentically loving. He single handedly eradicated each and every stereotype wrongfully foisted on motorcycle clubs, enhanced the popularity of the pastime and sent me away with memories and self worth I haven't forgotten in 36 years.
One hundred years from now, all the people that knew and loved me and who knew and loved Bill will be gone. However one important thing will remain and be remembered by God. This is kindness and kindness transcends time because it comes from God.
The book of Romans11:22 tells us to remember the kindness of God and to continue in God's kindness. This is the persona that made Bill Overton who he was and it is why he will never truly be forgotten. Bill Overton, who passed August 30th was forever kind and kindness rides forever free.
